Doubled Up Quilt Cover – A Simple and Stylish Quilt for Beginners
I’m so excited to share the cover quilt for my newest quilt pattern: Doubled Up! This fun and fast quilt was designed with beginners in mind, using simple strip piecing techniques to create a modern and versatile patchwork quilt. Whether you’re a new quilter or just looking for a quick and satisfying project, Doubled Up is a great choice!
Let me tell you all about the quilt I made for the pattern cover!
Fabrics on this Modern Patchwork Quilt
For the cover quilt, I used Riley Blake Designs Confetti Cottons — a beautiful collection of solid fabrics that bring bold, crisp color to the design. I love using solids because they really let the quilt pattern shine and highlight the clean, geometric layout of Doubled Up.
The layout I chose for the cover version shows off the contrast between colors while keeping things simple and striking. It’s a great reminder that you don’t need complicated prints to make a quilt that makes a statement!

The backing is Tossed wide back fabric from Missouri Star Quilt Company. I love using wide backings because they save time and eliminate the need to piece together smaller fabric cuts. It keeps the process simple and the finish clean—perfect for beginners!

Batting & Quilting on this Doubled Up Quilt
I used Missouri Star Quilt Company’s Quilters Best Blend batting, which is one of my go-to choices. It’s a cotton/poly blend that provides great loft and drape without adding too much bulk.
For the quilting, I stitched it myself on my home sewing machine using a motif from the book WALK by Jacquie Gering. It’s a fun and modern design that adds beautiful texture to the finished quilt. If you’ve been wanting to try creative walking foot quilting, this book is a fantastic resource!
I pieced and quilted this entire quilt using Mettler Silk Finish Cotton Thread in 50 wt, and I love using it in a cone! It’s smooth, strong, and works beautifully for both piecing and quilting. Plus, the cone lasts a long time, making it a great investment for regular quilters.

Learn How to Strip Piece
Since strip piecing is such an important part of making the Doubled Up quilt, I’ve put together a full beginner-friendly strip piecing tutorial to walk you through the process!
This guide includes everything you need to know—from how to cut strips accurately to how to sew them together and press them for precision.

Why I Love the Doubled Up Quilt Pattern
One of my favorite things about the Doubled Up Quilt is how quickly it comes together. The strip piecing makes it perfect for chain piecing, and there are multiple layout options so you can really make it your own. Whether you go with high-contrast colors like I did or something more subtle and scrappy, Doubled Up is super customizable.
It’s also a great quilt for practicing foundational quilting skills—like accurate cutting, straight seams, nesting, and assembling blocks—without feeling overwhelming.
