Triangle Quilt Blocks That Sparkle: The Luminary Quilt

I’m excited to share another sample quilt I made from my Luminary quilt pattern! This version is the same throw size as the one featured on the cover of the pattern, but with a completely different look thanks to the color choices and quilting. It’s always so fun to see how fabric selection and quilting styles can transform the feel of a quilt, and this one turned out so bright and fresh.

Throw Size Luminary Quilt in Riley Blake Solids

This particular Luminary quilt is made entirely with solid fabrics from Riley Blake Designs. I carefully selected a palette of bold and saturated colors that work beautifully together and highlight the clean, geometric structure of the pattern. Solid fabrics really let the piecing and layout shine, which is one of the reasons I love using them for modern quilt designs like Luminary.

I chose these colors for this version to create a slightly different mood from the cover quilt—still modern and bright, but with more contrast and a clean-lined feel. Paired with the teal confetti backing and a walking-foot quilting motif, it feels like a perfect balance of playful and minimalist.

Backing and Batting Details

For the backing, I used a wide back print called Backdrop Wide – Confetti in Teal Blue, which is from Robert Kaufman and available through Missouri Star Quilt Co. It’s a fun and subtle print that adds interest to the back while keeping the overall color story cohesive. I used one of my all time favorite battings — Quilters Best Blend batting. It’s one of my favorites because it adds just the right amount of softness and structure, making it perfect for cozy quilts like this.

Modern Walking Foot Quilting from WALK by Jacquie Gering

What makes this sample stand out is the quilting. I followed a motif from the book WALK by Jacquie Gering, which focuses on creative quilting designs you can achieve using a walking foot. The motif I used adds gorgeous texture and really complements the modern style of the quilt top. I love how quilting can take a design to the next level, and this motif helped enhance the clean lines and strong angles of the Luminary layout.

For quilting, I used Mettler Silk Finish Cotton Thread in 40 wt, which glides beautifully and adds just the right finishing touch to the project.

Unique Techniques in the Luminary Quilt Pattern

Just like all versions of the Luminary quilt, this one uses a fun and simple method I developed for making Half Rectangle Triangles. The pattern also includes a snowball technique that helps reduce seam bulk and gives the final quilt a crisp, flat finish. These construction choices make the sewing process more enjoyable and the final product even more polished.

What makes the Luminary Quilt pattern stand out is the use of some really thoughtful construction methods that streamline the process, eliminate unnecessary seams, and reduce bulk.

These techniques are all clearly broken down in the pattern, with diagrams and tips to guide you along the way. Whether you’re a confident beginner or a seasoned quilter, you’ll love how quick and enjoyable this pattern is to make!

Quilting Tools I Used

Here are a few of my favorite tools that made this quilt come together smoothly:

Make Your Own Luminary Quilt

If you want to make your own Luminary quilt, the pattern is available in three sizes: baby, throw, and bed size. Whether you use prints, solids, or something scrappy, the design gives you a lot of room to experiment and personalize your quilt. Don’t forget to share your version on social media with the hashtag #LuminaryQuilt and tag me @homemadeemilyjane so I can see what you create!
