Safari-Themed Baby Quilt: Catalyst Quilt Pattern in Earthy Solids

This baby quilt is extra special—made for my new nephew and designed to fit right into his adventure-themed nursery.

With a palette of earthy greens and warm browns, plus the sweetest safari backing, this version of the Catalyst Quilt Pattern feels playful, grounded, and perfect for a little boy’s space.

A Color Palette Inspired by the Nursery

When I started planning this quilt, I knew I wanted it to coordinate with baby Hudson’s jungle/safari-themed nursery.

I pulled together a mix of solids from Riley Blake Confetti Cottons and Colorworks Solids, including:

The result is a palette that feels earthy and natural, with just enough contrast to highlight the bold geometry of the Catalyst design.

It’s not a combination I would typically reach for, which made it such a fun creative stretch. It was a great challenge that I ended up loving as these colors really grew on me as I worked with them.

A Bold Baby Quilt with a Masculine Feel

Even at a smaller size, the Catalyst pattern really makes an impact.

This quilt finishes at 40″ square, making it a perfect baby size for tummy time, snuggles, or adding a statement piece to a nursery.

The strong geometric design paired with these earthy tones gives the quilt a look that feels bold and structured, while still being playful enough for a baby.

Quilting with a Fun Jungle Twist

The quilting on this one adds such a fun layer of detail.

I quilted it on my embroidery machine using the “Baby Jungle” end-to-end design from Designs by Juju, which ties in perfectly with the nursery theme.

To make the process more efficient, I used the largest hoop size possible and was able to complete the quilt with just 12 re-hoops, which felt like a win! If you don’t have easy access to a long arm machine but still want that look, using an embroidery machine is a great alternative.

The quilting really stands out on the solid fabrics, adding texture and subtle movement across the quilt without taking away from the pieced design.

The Perfect Safari Backing

For the backing, I chose Jungle Romp – Small Allover Animals Cream Yardage, a playful safari print featuring elephants, giraffes, and other animals.

It’s the perfect surprise on the back and ties the whole theme together in such a fun way.

The binding is Confetti Cottons Chive from Riley Blake, which adds a rich green frame that complements the quilt top beautifully.

Why This Safari-Themed Baby Quilt Means So Much

This quilt was such a joy to make—not just because of the design, but because of who it’s for.

I loved stepping a little outside of my usual color preferences to create something that fits his space so perfectly. It made the whole process feel extra thoughtful and intentional.

And more than anything, this quilt was made with so much love.

Baby Hudson is already so loved, and it makes me so happy knowing this quilt will be part of his space.
