The Ultimate Homemade Girls Dress

If you’ve been following along with my sewing lately you may have noticed an increase in garments popping up on my photo feed! Believe it or not, I actually started my sewing journey with garments and kind of stopped for a few years when quilts completely took over my life. My most recent make is this adorable Homemade Girls Dress!

One of my goals for this year has been to increase my garment sewing so I did what I like to do: found amazing fabrics and killer patterns and dove right in! If you want to see some other garment projects I’ve done recently check out my Peplum Top or Molly Dress blog posts! This month, I switched things up a bit and made a little girl dress!

The Perfect Homemade Girls Dress Pattern

I searched the internet for the perfect pattern and when I saw the Geranium Dress pattern I knew I had to make it! The Geranium Dress expansion pack pattern includes a peter pan collar that I just couldn’t say no to!

The Geranium Dress pattern is by @madebyrae and you can purchase it here. The expansion pack is sold separately but I 100% recommend it – here is the link! In addition to the peter pan collar, the expansion pack pattern offers tons of different options to make the dress unique – including different sleeve options, extending the bodice, and even using a zipper instead of button closure in the back. I honestly feel like you can use this pattern over and over and over again and still creating lots of different dresses from the same basic shapes!

Difficulty Level: Easy!

I am really thrilled with how the pattern explains every step in great detail! It’s super easy to follow and great for a beginner too! If you want to start sewing, making a little girl dress is a great place to start, especially since you’ll use only a fraction of the fabric as you would making an outfit for yourself! I also just think that anything miniature is the cutest thing ever, so that may be part of my obsession with this pattern!!

The Fabrics I Used

This Geranium Dress features fabric from Katarina Rochella’s newest line for Art Gallery Fabrics: Floralish! I couldn’t get enough of this cute watermelon print! For the contrasting collar and lining fabric I used AGF Pure Solids in Cotton Candy! They’re both 100% cotton, but this dress would also be amazing in Rayon or even a sturdy knit if you’re into that. (I have yet to get good at working with knits, but trust me when I say that I PLAN to!)

Are you loving the vibes for the fabric I picked? Click HERE to see the whole Floralish Look Book by Art Gallery Fabrics, which includes tons of other cute projects you can make with this fabric collection. And even better news for you: the entire Floralish collection of fabrics are now available for purchase. Click here to find yardage of this watermelon print, or click here to grab a 1/2 yard bundle of the whole collection!
