3 Ways to Make a Patriotic Quilt

Regardless of your political beliefs, I think most of us can agree that if it weren’t for the hundreds of thousands of people who have been willing to serve in the military to protect our homeland, America would not be what it is today. I have such high regard for the amazing service men and women, and I wanted to make some patriotic quilts to express my respect and appreciation.

Patriotic quilts using AccuQuilt

Over the past few months I’ve had this amazing opportunity to partner with one of my favorite veterans (my mom!) on a project where we can give back to some incredible service men & women. Today I’m going to share with you 3 ways we made Patriotic quilts using the AccuQuilt Go! I hope they spark some inspiration for you!

Can I Learn to Free Motion Quilt on My Sewing Machine?

Maybe you’ve already noticed, but I have been dedicating a LOT of time over the past year focusing on hand quilting, and before that I did a ton of straight line walking foot quilting, but I am thinking maybe I should do some more quilting on my machine – Free Motion Quilting, to be exact – also known as FMQ! I have actually made a couple quilts over the years with FMQ but I have never been happy with my stitches or designs.

Recently, I heard about an online course for learning how to Free Motion Quilt and I’ve decided it’s time for me to get some official training on the topic! Signing up for Free Motion Quilting Academy will be a great way for me to expand my skillset & get better at it, while also getting to practice it with some accountability! I love the idea of taking an online course so I don’t have to give up a whole weekend & lug all my stuff to an in-person class, but I can still connect with the other quilters in the class via virtual groups & show off our progress in photos!

Using AccuQuilt for Designer Quilt Patterns

Have you seen the AccuQuilt fabric cutting system and wondered if you’d still be able to make the quilts from your favorite quilt pattern designers? With some creativity and a little math, you definitely CAN use your AccuQuilt die cut machine to make nearly any designer quilt pattern! I am here to teach you exactly how you can convert a designer quilt pattern into an AccuQuilt pattern, and I’ll show you how I made the Indian Summer quilt by @suzyquilts using my AccuQuilt Go!  as the example. I used my AccuQuilt Go! to cut out all the fabrics and save a ton of time in the process!

Indian Summer Quilt Pattern with AccuQuilt

You can download the baby size pattern of this quilt for FREE here, or if you are feeling more ambitious, you can snag the throw version of the pattern in Suzy’s shop. I wrote these instructions with the baby version in mind, but by the end of this post you should feel comfortable and confident in your abilities to make the throw work for you as well! The most important thing to go through first are your necessities. Regardless of what quilt pattern you are trying to convert to use on your AccuQuilt fabric cutting machine, you’ll want to read through the entire quilt pattern to see what sizes and shapes are used. Many common designer quilt patterns use half square triangles (like Indian Summer!) or other shapes that can be found in traditional quilt blocks.

How to Free Motion Quilt (FMQ)

Are you a beginner quilter? Or maybe you’re an experienced quilter who just hasn’t learned how to do Free Motion Quilting yet? Now is your chance to dive in!

I know I’ve already written all about my trusty walking foot in my Walking Foot Basics blog post, and believe me, I still LOVE the simplicity of straight lines and will never trade my walking foot for anything. But when you want just a little more pizzaz – FMQ is for you!

I first began experimenting with Free Motion Quilting (FMQ) a few years ago. I’ve finished a handful of quilts with this technique and can honestly say it gets so much easier with practice – oh, and using an awesome machine for it certainly doesn’t hurt!
