Safari Applique Baby Onesie Gift Idea for a Jungle Nursery
I’ve been having so much fun experimenting with embroidery lately, especially machine appliqué projects that let me combine quilting and embroidery together. This custom embroidered baby onesie was such a sweet little project to make for my baby nephew’s safari-themed nursery, and it coordinated perfectly with the safari-inspired quilt I recently made for him too!
If you missed the quilt project, you can see the matching nursery inspiration in my Safari Baby Catalyst Quilt post.
Easy Machine Appliqué Tutorial
Want to learn more about the machine appliqué process? I walk through every step in my machine appliqué baby shirt tutorial, including how to read color charts, place fabrics, trim appliqué pieces, and achieve a clean finished design.
This applique baby onesie features an adorable giraffe appliqué design paired with the playful phrase “You Bet Giraffe I’m Cute” stitched using a playful embroidery font. It turned into one of my favorite personalized baby onesie gift projects so far because it combined soft neutral colors, tiny quilting scraps, and a fun jungle safari theme all in one quick creative finish.

A Sweet Safari-Themed Personalized Baby Onesie Gift
There’s just something extra special about handmade baby gifts, especially when they can be customized to match a nursery theme. Safari nurseries are such a fun source of inspiration for embroidery ideas for baby gifts because there are so many cute animal appliqué options to work with.
For this custom embroidered baby onesie, I used soft neutral tones with dark yellow gingham fabric scraps and warm brown thread hues to create a cozy, earthy safari look. The giraffe applique design came from Designs by JuJu, and the playful lettering was stitched using the Pajama Jam Embroidery Font.
One of my favorite parts of this project is that the phrase is completely customizable. You could easily personalize a similar applique baby onesie with a baby’s name, nickname, or another playful saying to create a truly one-of-a-kind baby shower gift.

Project Details
This machine applique baby clothes project came together surprisingly quickly. It took me about about an hour total (plus a quick snack break in the middle!).
Project Details:
- Project Type: Applique baby onesie
- Theme: Safari / Jungle Nursery
- Onesie Size: 6–9 months
- Blank Onesie: solid tan onesie from Walmart
- Embroidery Design: Giraffe Applique from Designs by JuJu
- Embroidery Font: Pajama Jam Embroidery Font
- Fabric Used: Quilting cotton scraps from previous quilt projects
- Stabilizer: Designs by JuJu Magic Mesh Plus with iron-on stabilizer backing
- Topper: Used on the text portion only
I also found that the 6–9 month size was probably the smallest size I could comfortably hoop for embroidery. I might try out a smaller size in the future just to see how it goes though.

Why I Love Using Quilt Scraps for Machine Applique
This project reminded me how much I love using tiny leftover quilting scraps for embroidery projects. Some fabric pieces are too small to save for another quilt, but they work perfectly for applique embroidery designs for baby clothes.
Honestly, this might be my new favorite scrap-busting method.
As much as I love quilting, sometimes it’s nice to have a smaller creative project that can be finished in an afternoon instead of over several days or weeks. A personalized baby onesie gift feels meaningful and handmade, but it’s also a much lower-commitment project than making an entire quilt.
Machine applique is especially beginner-friendly because you still get that satisfying fabric-and-thread combination without needing to piece a full quilt top. If you’ve been curious about trying embroidery, projects like this are such a fun place to start.
