Modern One-Block Quilts // quilt pattern book review
If you are a quilter, I am sure you know that there are myriad ways to obtain an awesome quilt pattern, but not all are the same quality!
I have been through phases where I was too thrifty to purchase patterns and chose to only make quilts if I could find a FREE pattern for it. This method actually introduced me to some of my favorite quilt patterns, but it also resulted in a handful of headaches. The thing about free patterns is that there is often far less thought, effort, and testing that goes into those patterns. This is not always the case, but I ran into a couple doozies that required me to waste fabric and do my own quilt math, which did not thrill me.
I want to tell you about a great, thrifty, way to get really awesome quilt patterns: Quilting Books!
This blog post will outline a review of the book “Modern One-Block Quilts” by Natalia Bonner and Kathleen Whiting (published by C&T Publishing). The book comes complete with 22 different patterns in 3 different sizes (baby, twin, and queen) — that’s 66 variations for one low price, costing less than a couple yards of fabric!I just got this book recently, and I decided that my first quilt from it would be “Wiggling” – in the baby size. This one finished at a 45″ square. I love how it showcases the Bari J. Art Gallery Fabrics bundle of fabrics just so perfectly! I got this bundle from Linen Bouquet Designs and it came with 7 fat quarters. I added in the AGF Purple Wine to give it a little extra color pop.
The patterns in Modern One-Block Quilts are all unique and a lot of fun. Some lend well to 2-color quilts which I find so awesome, and some would work with precuts, like this one I did with 8 fat quarters! I love how the patterns vary and allow you to use up your stash on virtually any of these patterns.
Some other patterns in Modern One-Block Quilts that I just can’t wait to make are called “American Stars” and “Churned”.
“American Stars” would be an awesome quilt pattern to use for a 2 or even 3 color quilt, and would lend well to solids! “Churned” looks like a really fun quilt to make because it’s a modern twist on the traditional churn-dash pattern. I love when traditional quilting and modern quilting coincide!
As mentioned earlier, each pattern in this book comes in 3 sizes: baby, twin, and king. What I loved the most about the baby sizes is that they were all pretty generous and large enough to really suit the precious baby for years to come! You could also very easily make a Throw size since the quilts are all made with repetitions of the same blocks!
