Ivy League Quilt // pattern review

My friend Rachel over at @wren.collective released her very first quilt pattern: Ivy League! I tested the pattern and really love this pattern, and all the different variations I have seen so far from other testers too!

I made the baby size version of this pattern, and it finished at 39″ x 43″, but the pattern also includes a Wall Hanging size, and a Throw Size. To see lots of awesome colorways and the different sizes of this quilt, check out Wren-collective’s Ivy League pattern release blog post.

This quilt is a super fun, modern way to use triangles! If you’ve never sewn with triangles before, now is the perfect opportunity. The pattern is beginner friendly and comes with templates, but I highly suggest getting this ClearView triangle ruler (really, it will be so helpful and you can use it in tons more quilt patterns too!)

For this quilt, I used solids in various different shades of Pink and Coral from @pbsfabrics. These are all really great quality and you can buy yardage from Pineapple Fabrics online.

If you follow along on my instagram @homemadeemilyjane then you might have seen the hand quilting I did for this quilt. I have been super super obsessed with hand quilting lately. I used Perle Cotton thread (size 8).

Have you ever hand quilted before? I have not one, but TWO blog posts all about hand quilting that can help you get started with these super easy BIG stitches! Check out my Hand Quilting Essentials to learn all the tools you need to get started, and then check out my 10 Steps to Easy Hand Quilting to learn the techniques.

When hand quilting I absolutely adore using Quilter’s Dream Orient batting. It is a blend of natural fibers and creates a super luxurious drape for your finished quilt. My favorite part about Quilter’s Dream Orient batting is that you can quilt it up to 8″ apart (or as dense as you wish)! When hand quilting with it, the needle glides through easily with no bearding! (Bearding is when the batting tries to sneak its way up through the fabric, and it’s no fun.) If you’ve never tried out my favorite batting, I highly suggest you click this link!

Now, let me tell you about this fabulous fabric I used for the backing! I have had this fabric for what feels like forever, just waiting for the perfect excuse to use it! I got it from Joann’s in their Novelty Prints section and could totally see it also being used for throw pillows, little girl sun dresses, or even a beach bag. Its a good think I have extra!

I hope you enjoy making your very own Ivy League Quilt just as much as I loved making this watermelon-tastic pink baby girl quilt! I cant wait to see your version on Instagram using #ivyleaguequilt!
