Modular Quilt Pattern Cover Quilt | Modern Color Block Quilt with Solids

The cover quilt for the new Modular Quilt Pattern combines cheerful shades of pink, yellow, and blue with a crisp white background to create a modern geometric quilt that feels both playful and clean. The bold color blocking and structured layout make this quilt such a fun example of how impactful simple patchwork can be.

This version of the quilt was made entirely from fat quarters and sewn using efficient strip piecing techniques that make the construction process incredibly fast and satisfying.

If you love beginner-friendly quilts, modern patchwork, and efficient sewing projects, this quilt is such a fun one to make.

A Modern Color Block Quilt Made with Solids

For the cover quilt, I chose an all-solid fabric palette featuring bright spring-inspired shades of yellow, pink, and blue paired with a white background.

Most of the solids came from Riley Blake Designs, along with a few additional fabrics pulled from my stash. I love how solids allow the geometric design of the quilt to really stand out without competing with busy prints.

The overall look feels:

  • modern
  • cheerful
  • structured
  • minimalist
  • timeless

This quilt is a perfect example of how a simple color palette can completely transform a beginner quilt pattern into something bold and striking.

The clean white background helps emphasize the modular shapes throughout the quilt and creates lots of contrast between the accent fabrics and the background pieces. Something I love about this Modular Quilt Pattern is how easy it is to make with a curated Fat Quarter Bundle. I have many beautiful options in my shop:

Why I Chose Solids for the Cover Quilt

When designing the cover version of the Modular Quilt Pattern, I knew I wanted the focus to stay on the shapes and movement created by the patchwork itself.

Because the design combines both squares and rectangles in a color-block layout, solids help showcase the structure of the quilt beautifully. The fabric choices feel clean and modern while still keeping the quilt soft and inviting.

I also love that solids feel timeless. Even though the colors are playful and fresh, the overall quilt still feels classic enough to enjoy for years.

This quilt reminds me so much of colorful modular building blocks, which is actually part of the inspiration behind the pattern name itself.

A Fat Quarter Quilt Pattern Designed for Efficiency

One of my favorite things about the Modular Quilt Pattern is just how efficient the construction process is.

This quilt was made entirely from fat quarters — including the background fabrics. Instead of cutting yardage, I actually cut the white background fabric into fat quarters first so I could stack and layer all of the fabrics together before cutting strips.

That means when it’s time to sew strip sets together, all of the strips are already perfectly organized and lined up. Instead of sorting through pieces one at a time, the sewing process becomes incredibly smooth and fast.

It saves SO much time.

The repetitive strip piecing construction makes this quilt such a relaxing project to work on, especially during busy seasons of life. Even with babies around and constant interruptions, this quilt felt manageable and satisfying to sew because the process was so streamlined.

Both techniques pair perfectly with the Modular Quilt Pattern.

My Favorite Part of Making This Quilt

There’s something so calming about sewing long strip sets together.

One of my favorite parts of making this quilt was simply sitting at the sewing machine listening to the steady hummmm of the machine while chain piecing strips together. The repetitive construction makes this such a wonderful “brain break” quilt project.

The design looks modern and intricate when finished, but the actual sewing process is approachable enough for beginners while still being satisfying for experienced quilters.

That combination is honestly one of my favorite things about this pattern.

Quilting & Finishing Details

This throw size version of the Modular Quilt Pattern finishes at 60” x 72” and was longarm quilted by Megan at Northern Designs Minnesota.

The backing fabric is a beautiful Speckled wideback from Ruby Star Society, which paired perfectly with the colorful solids on the quilt front while keeping the backing modern and playful.

Using a wideback fabric made finishing especially simple since there was no need to piece the backing.

The quilt was finished with a cotton/poly blend batting, giving it a soft drape while still keeping a cozy quilt texture.

Beginner-Friendly Modern Quilt Pattern

The Modular Quilt Pattern was designed to be approachable for beginners while still creating a bold modern finish.

The pattern includes:

  • detailed diagrams
  • pressing instructions
  • seam nesting guidance
  • coloring pages
  • organized labels

The strip piecing construction makes the quilt come together quickly, and the repetitive sewing process is easy to follow even for newer quilters.

If you enjoy modern geometric quilt patterns that feature efficient strip piecing like my Doubled Up Quilt Pattern and Linear Quilt Pattern then the Modular Quilt Pattern will probably become another favorite.
