A Special Baby Boy Quilt – My First Doubled Up Quilt

This quilt holds a very special place in my heart—it’s the first Doubled Up quilt I ever made, and it was lovingly stitched for my second baby boy on the way. 💙

The name “Doubled Up” holds extra meaning for me. It not only reflects the repeat block design used in the quilt, but also celebrates this new season in our family—doubling up on the love with baby boy number two.

Designing and sewing this quilt was deeply personal. It became the first gift I finished for our newest little guy, and I poured so much joy and anticipation into every step.

The Color Palette – White, Green, Aqua, and Blue

This quilt uses a soft but vibrant color palette of white paired with greens, aquas, and blues—perfect for a baby boy, but also easily adaptable for any style or gender. The white background is a clean, crisp solid, and the patchwork fabrics were scraps from my stash that worked together beautifully.

Doubled Up is great for scraps as long as your strips are at least 21″ long—so it’s a perfect way to use leftover jelly roll strips, cutoffs from previous quilts, or anything you’ve been holding onto for a special project.

Classic Quilting for this Patchwork Baby Boy Quilt

The quilt follows a classic layout that showcases the repeating patchwork design. To complement the structured look, I quilted it with a traditional straight-line grid that frames each block, giving it a timeless finish that will never go out of style.

I used Mettler Silk Finish Cotton Thread in 40 wt for the quilting—just a bit thicker than my usual 50 wt, which helped give the stitches a little more definition.

If you’re looking for a simple and clean way to quilt your own Doubled Up, this grid method is a fantastic choice for beginners or seasoned quilters alike.

Backing Fabric

For the backing, I used a piece of Speckled by Ruby Star Society that I had leftover from a previous quilt. It was just the right size and added a soft, playful touch to the back of the quilt.

I love finding a use for leftovers from past projects—especially when they’re as beautiful as Ruby Star fabrics. It made the quilt feel even more personal.

The Story of the Matching Baby Sweater

In addition to the quilt, I also knit a tiny baby pullover to match! I used the Poppy Baby Pullover pattern by Seventh Sedge, and the yarn is WoolEase by Lion Brand Yarn in the color “stillwater”.

The colors coordinate with the quilt, and the whole set just makes my heart melt.

If you enjoy both quilting and knitting, this is a wonderful combination to try. There’s something really special about creating handmade keepsakes in more than one craft—and both of these items will be part of our baby’s story from the very beginning.
